Characteristics of these countries include poverty and meager environmental conditions. The governments of such countries often overlook environmental issues and thus rampant pollution is prominent in third world countries. Third world countries are faced with a major challenge in choosing between food and a clean environment. This is because with the enforcement of regulations of the environment, the economy of such countries will be severely affected leading to scarcity of food. The most viable option chosen is often food at the expense of the environment. For this reason, developed nations cease this loophole and exploit it to their advantage. Western countries build up industries that pollute the environment from its wastes. Wastes from such industries are dumped carelessly with no concern if the indigenous citizens will be affected or not. Third world nations have no strict regulations to discourage such industrial pollution therefore the developed nations continue to pollute without being penalized. In addition harmful chemicals that are produced by multinational companies, which are forbidden in their home nations, find ready market in developing nations. The governments of third world countries, in an attempt to allow its citizens to make a living, turn a blind eye to such companies (LaDou 1991). The third world countries are victims of environmental degradation which include air pollution, water pollutions, soil erosion, and deforestations. The industries built up by foreign companies have more negative implications on the citizens of the third world countries.
