The stalemate between the United States and North Korea has been evolving rapidly and taking drastic turns as the two administrations strive to control the latter’s nuclear program. The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has reiterated his stand against the denuclearization policy as retaliation towards the United State's hostility towards his country (Cole and Register, 2020). This is according to his statement about the 2019 ultimatum to the US about their approach in handling Korea’s nuclear tests and development. The Pyongyang has taken the stern stance due to the failed series of talks for a concession between the United States over the interference with South Korea and their nuclear programs. Sang-Hun (2020) reported the 2017 ballistic tests, 2018 Singapore meeting between the two leaders (Kim and Trump), and the economic sanctions against the former as the series of events that led to the decision.
In his new year’s statement, which according to Sang-Hun (2020) was delivered through the State agency rather than televised speech as it is his norm, he said that the development of their nuclear weapons would be depended on the actions that the US undertakes (Cole and Register, 2020). The decision was as heed to the end-year deadline that Mr Kim gave the US concerning the denuclearization talks with president Trump (Reuters, 2019). Developing the country's nuclear defence and weapons to counter the US would be the primary focus of the country until a bilateral agreement is achieved was the leader's statement in the New Year's Eve.
