Introduction
The Big Sick movie features Kumal who is considering leaving standup comedy to create his own scripture conserving his Pakistani background. His parents have tried to set him up with several Pakistan women for marriage because they do not want him to marry someone outside their ethnicity. Kumal should follow the footsteps of his parents of a set-up marriage. However, during one of his shows, he meets a young lady Emily who was amused by his performance. Eventually, they follow in love, but Kumal has to face the fear of being disowned by his parents once they find out about his idea. His cousin is a living example of what could happen to him if the parents found out. Emily finds out about the arranged marriages and the desires for Kumal's parents to have him marry a lady from Pakistan. They argue about it, and Kumal confirms that he is also scared about the whole idea. This becomes a challenge in their relationship and Emily decides to end it. After some time, Emily is admitted to the hospital for having chronic liver disease, and this makes Kumal realize how much he is in love with her, and they should not break up. Emily's parents have also learned about the terrible breakup and do not want anything to do with Kumal, but he manages to convince them that he cares for Emily. As well, Emily's father reveals that he was once unfaithful to his wife and he regrets it. Emily leaves the hospital only to learn that Kumal had decided to move to New York City to begin a new life. Her heart is troubled by love, and she is willing to tell him about her feelings. When they meet, she is unable to do it, Kumal leaves to New York and during one of his shows there, he notices Emily in the crowd. Therefore, using the family systems, behavioral theory, and the ego psychology theory, this paper will analyze the conceptualization and the treatment techniques as presented by the theory.
Family systems
This theory argues out that a family is an emotional unit and an individual cannot be understood in isolation (Cowan & Pape Cowan, 2015). This explains the reason as to why Kumal's parents think that it is best for him to get married to a lady from their ethnic origin. Leaving him to decide who to marry is a sign of isolation, and he would not be able to make the right decision. As well, Emily's family think that it is best for Kumal to stay away from Emily after learning about their breakup. The parents are out to defend the feelings of Emily because she is in a coma and unable to do it. Emily's father feels isolated and guilty for having cheated on his wife. It is an action that made him realize how much he loves her.
Therefore, in regard to the theory, Kumal should allow his parents to guide him on what to do but at the same time be able to up an open discussion with them about his feelings for Emily. This could contribute to them in changing their mind and allowing him to marry outside their culture. Also, the family settings have made it easy for Kumal to explain to Emily's family about his feelings for her. They then allow him to stay around and help in the treatment of her illness.
