1 Which of Maslow’s needs were fulfilled for Seamus? Which were not? Did the fulfillment of these needs change at any time in Seamus’s life? Could Seamus be perceived as self-actualized, according to Maslow’s theory? Explain. (7 points)
Of all Maslow’s needs, Seamus fulfilled his physiological, safety, love and belonging, and self-actualization needs. As a high school student, Seamus was very active in sports, which allowed him to fulfill his physiological needs. When Seamus got an internship and later a permanent job at a law firm, he achieved his safety needs. When he was able to make partner at the firm, he achieved his self-actualization needs. As a married man with children, Seamus has also fulfilled his love and belonging needs. For a period of time, Seamus had not fulfilled his esteem needs. He felt that a lot of the success he had achieved in life was due to his father. However, this changed when his father revealed that he had only helped him secure an internship. The fulfilment of his physiological needs changed when Seamus joined college. Here, he learned that to succeed, he had to perform well in his academics as opposed to sports. Seamus can be perceived as self-actualized because he has lived up to his potential and exceeded the expectations of his parents and others around him. Furthermore, when Seamus learns that his father has not been responsible for his upward mobility at the firm, he is pleased with himself.
