Coaching is a continuous relationship that is aimed at aiding clients to take action towards the realization of their goals, visions, and desires. Coaching employs a process of inquiry and personal discovery to boost the customer’s awareness level and responsibility, thus providing them with support, structure, and feedback (Lowman, 2016). The entire coaching process helps the clients in defining and achieving professional and individual goals easily and quickly than would have been. In counseling, coaching is considered to be a specialization that requires specific and focused training to achieve and apply globally accepted practices. Counselors encourage customer growth through ways that foster the welfare and interests of the client, hence promoting the formation of healthy relationships (Labardee, Williams, & Hodges, 2012). As compared to coaches, counselors are always encouraged to make contributions to the community without a focus on financial gains. To maintain professionalism among members, coaching and counseling associations and bodies have set out minimum codes and ethics that coaches and counselors are expected to adhere to. When members fail to meet the expectations and guidelines when attending to clients, the laws and principles will act as a reference for raising complaints and executing disciplinary actions (Greta A. Davis, 2012). The essay analyses two case studies to provide a better understanding of ethical situations during coaching and counseling practices.
Avoiding Conflicts of Interests and Roles
The case is based on two consultants who work together to deliver on a program for a complex multinational company. An employee psychologist in the group gets help from a renowned expert who also worked at a local university at a management level. Since he had the capability of hiring part-time tutors, he hired the psychologist without consulting the other members of the school recruitment team and goes ahead to negotiate terms of employment that appear to be unreasonable as compared to that given to other members of the faculty. The contract was kept as a secret to the other members considering that it was unrealistic.
The lack of a clear organizational structure of hiring and remunerations for part time tutors was the greatest contributor to the situation. One individual cannot be a decision maker on matters of compensation in such an institution of that caliber. When the consultant realized that he had the capability of hiring and determining pay for a part-time lecturer, he uses it to his advantage to pay back his colleague for having involved him in the company program. The consultant was able to achieve his motive, considering that the situation, which is the lack of proper employment guidelines, favored him.
The consultant breached the integrity principle that requires that psychologists maintain a high sense of honesty, and trustworthiness which in turn results in telling the truth and not misleading others (Greta A.
