Internationally, companies are consistently improving their attention on social responsibility whether by protecting the environment, advocating for gender equity, eradicating poverty at local, national or global levels. Social responsibility involves aligning a company’s operations in an ethical and sustainable way (Chandler, 2019). Being a socially responsible company strengthens the company’s image and brand reputation, improves employee morale, increases performance and productivity (Tran, 2019).
Company overview
PepsiCo was a global consumer food and beverage giant based in New York, United States. The company workforce included over 300,000 direct employees and over one million of indirect employees. The organization distributed its products to more than 200 countries in different territories across the world. Its product portfolio included 22 brands of beverage and snacks that generated over $1billion in retail sales (Thompson, 2013). Its origin dates back to 1890 from pharmacist Caleb Bradham under the flagship name “Brad drink”. After some years the drink changed its name to Pepsi-Cola and grew to become a major rival to Coca-Cola (PepsiCo Home, 2019). The company merged with Frito-Lay 1965 to form PepsiCo Inc. that led to organization reshaping its portfolio, building in new capabilities as well as investing into new markets across the globe. By 2014, PepsiCo was a major beverage company with revenues exceeding $ 66 billion and net profits of $7 billion (Thompson, 2013).

The company's mission is to “Provide delicious, affordable, convenient and complementary foods and beverages from wholesome breakfasts to healthy and fun daytime snacks and evening treats”. The company aims to satisfy the customers’ needs as well as invest in the people and the communities to achieve sustainable growth. On the other hand, the company vision is “ To deliver top-tier financial performance over the long term by integrating sustainability into our business strategy, leaving a positive imprint on society and the environment” The company sustainability is built on the idea of ”performance with purpose” which integrates the aspects of financial performance, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility (PepsiCo Home, 2019).

Over the years PepsiCo has undergone rapid growth to become one of the largest companies in the food and beverage industry. Like any other corporation, PepsiCo is affected by economic, political, legal, environmental, social and technological factors. A PESTEL analysis shows that the organization has many opportunities as well as threats regarding its growth and international expansion. The company have high chances in expanding into new markets, increased product innovation to address issues related to quality and health, business sustainability as well as supply chain diversification (Thompson, 2013).
