Due to this experience, the idea of peer-to-peer room sharing was born. The company has experienced immense growth in the years it has been in operation. Currently, Airbnb has more than 5 million lodging options across 81,000 cities. The internal valuation conducted in preparation for its IPO valued the company at $38 billion (Yohn, 2019). The mission of Airbnb is “to make people around the world feel like they could “belong anywhere.” The objective of the company is to leverage technology to bring people together. The emergence of the sharing economy has driven the accommodation industry. Airbnb seeks to enhance a sharing economy where property owners can rent out their private flats. The strength of Airbnb is its ability to offer affordable rates compared to the larger hotels. Its weakness is that the company relies on the host hence, it cannot guarantee the safety of clients. The availability of technology offers an opportunity for Airbnb to improve its services. The threat to the company is how its business model can easily be copied by other companies. Airbnb faces the challenges of safety for guests, legal battles and bad reputation from unsatisfied guests. The safety of guests has been a challenge for the company since it does not own the apartments. It has also been challenging to use Airbnb in some locations due to the risk of insecurity hence losing clients to more established brands. Additionally, Airbnb has encountered legal battles where the apartment owners do not follow local regulations (Lazarow, 2015). The company has often found itself in legal challenges as some cities try to establish the legality of renting rooms through Airbnb.
