SIB 429 Case Analysis and Presentation Guidelines Each group will be assigned a case (at the end of the textbook). Here are some guidelines:  Your case analysis will address the questions on the Case Question Guide that will be provided to you and posted on Blackboard. Answer those questions by using the theories and concepts covered in class. The cases will have relevant content to the most recent lectures from the class.  Failure to incorporate concepts and theories learned in class into your case analysis will significantly affect your grade. You should push yourselves to think theoretically, and see how the concepts covered in class relate to the case material. The cases are all written matching the theories, so you should be able to draw linkages; just make sure to read the chapters and your class notes before solving the cases.  Groups will generate additional discussion questions for the class. To do this, you will go beyond the information provided in the case. You should scan the recent news media (i.e. WSJ) for relevant and up-to-date news, and provide relevant and thought provoking information to enrich your analysis.  Group written case analyses are expected to be 5-7 pages. Presentations should be around 20-25 minutes based on your report, followed by a 10-15 minute discussion.  The presenting group will play a leading role in class discussion by outlining what they think are the central issues in the case, analyzing these issues, and presenting the results of their analysis to the class. It is the responsibility of the presenting group to lead a further discussion of the case involving the rest of the class.  It is important that each group member should participate during the case presentation. One group member should not dominate the case presentation. It is primarily your responsibility to eliminate free riding and ensure that team members participate. The incentive alignment mechanism will be the peer evaluation forms at the end of the course. Individual members who have not contributed to the group effort will have the final grade for the cases adjusted to reflect their actual contribution level (see grading section for more details).  You should bring one (1) hard copy of both the case write-up and the presentation slides to the class, and hand them to me before your presentation. The case presentation schedule is available on the class schedule. Students not presenting on the day of a case presentation: Each student will write a one page write-up for each case presented (unless the case is assigned to your group and you are presenting that day). You are supposed to address one (1) of the questions from the “Case Question Guide” posted on Blackboard. You should not reiterate the points in the case, but rather you should provide thoughtful reflections/answers to the question you chose. You are not going to write this one page write-up for the case you will be presenting (that leaves you with 5 case write-ups). Case write-ups are due at the end of the class when the case is presented, hard copy only.

EBay international growth
Over the years, organizations across the world have constantly sought opportunities to increase their customer base, investment as well as revenue streams. As a result, when the growth strategies are exhausted at the domestic level, companies move to international markets intending to grow and expand. According to Bortoluzzi et al. (2018), distributing products into additional countries increases an organization's customer base as well as opening the firm to more investment opportunities. Typically, as a firm offer exciting solutions and build loyalty across the international markets, revenues build-up and increases as well (Holmes et al., 2018). Similarly, going to international markets helps in reducing costs by; increasing proximity to suppliers, minimizing shipping costs as well as utilizing economies of scale (Bortoluzzi et al., 2018). Besides international expansion allows a firm to diversify as well as boost innovation in the development of new business solutions.
However, entering foreign markets can be an uphill task especially in countries with strict rules and regulations (Xiaoqing, 2018). Different organizations have utilized diverse strategies such as joint ventures, mergers, and strategic alliances, direct exporting, partnering with foreign firms, acquiring firms in the different countries, franchising firm brand to mention a few (Mittal, 2018). Similarly, eBay, an American e-commerce conglomerate consistently tried to expand its market by diversifying its business through venturing into new businesses as well as expanding into other geographical sectors. Since its inception, eBay enjoyed strong revenue growth and was among the dominant e-commerce. The organization was favored by its unique business that helped unite over 221 million buyers and sellers. The growth led to the firm expanding its product portfolio from collectibles to household products, automobile, customer services as well as the mobile industry.
Despite the significant growth, eBay faced numerous challenges both in the domestic and international markets. For example, the minimal barriers in entering the e-commerce industry attracted many competitors such as Amazon Inc., uBid, overstock, and Yahoo. To counter the increased competition, eBay embarked on aggressive acquisitions as well as establishing partnerships and joint ventures with related and unrelated businesses across the world. For example, eBay acquired half.com and MercadoLibre in the year 2000 and 2001 respectively. Similarly, the organization announced international cooperation with Google an initiative that would help improve the business and customer base. Moreover, eBay engaged in joint ventures as well as strategic alliances. For instance, in 2004 the company purchased a 25% stake in Craigslist a well-established e-commerce player in the urban communities.
