Climate Change as a Result of Greenhouse Emissions

Case Study Instructions:

The topic is "Climate Change"

Part 1: ~2 pages

For this part, please review in very careful detail the Project 3: Infographic Deliverable.  Then, do the following.

  • Describe in detail:
  • The topic you would like to work with, and why
  • Be specific.
  • What learning purpose does this infographic serve YOU.  Please be very specific here.  I expect a solid, thoughtful answer.
  • How can you make this a mixed chart infographic, and what type of isotype graphic do you think may work well
  • Start thinking about this now!
  • Describe your target audience, as explained in the prompt, and the purpose with a verb.
  • Describe your topic, as explained in the prompt, and then write a working thesis
  • List at least 3 different sources of data that may work for your topic.
  • Write a short paragraph each (3-5 sentences, please) about what you find at each source and about the usefulness of each source.
  • A good starting place is the Online Resources and Additional Information page in the Project 3 Tools Module.
  • Final thought: where are you going to go from here?  What are your next steps?  What questions do you have?  Let me know!

Refer to Principles of Graphic design.pdf for guidance.

Climate Change Infographic
Part 1
The topic I would like to work with is climate change: the United Nations defines climate change as the long-term shifts in temperatures as well as weather patterns. I want to discuss the issue because it involves rising temperatures, extreme weather events, disappearing wildlife populations and habitats, wrecked livelihoods and communities, declining agricultural yields, along with a host of other adverse impacts occurring at a rate that is too rapid for living things to adapt to. Climate change is already affecting human health as geographic ranges of harmful pests and disease-carrying organisms expand. The higher incidences of extreme weather events are pushing people away from their homes even as they reap less from their fields with every turning year. It is therefore critical to raise awareness of the issue. I can make this a mixed chart Infographic by incorporating statistical data as well as a variety of charts, visualized numbers, and pictograms in communicating my data story. I will include at least three different charts (a pie chart, a column chart, and a line chart), as well as one visualized number and one isotype. I will use the isotype graphic of a flooded house to illustrate how as a result of global warming, the sea level has been rising and causing extreme weather on nations’ floodplains, where millions of people are currently situated.
Floods are the most common extreme weather pattern, and as the population in coastal and inland areas continues to rise, the number of people at risk of death and homelessness continues to rise. The target audience of this prompt is world leaders: the world is gradually awakening to the fact that climate change is a real and actively occurring phenomenon. However, even as scientists and environmentalists rally around reducing greenhouse emissions and building community resilience to climate change effects, most world leaders are doing little to address the looming dangers. This Infographic is intended to incentivize world leaders to start taking action to protect their communities from the debilitating effects (social, economic, and health) of climate change. A working thesis for this Infographic is: Climate change is mostly the result of greenhouse gas emissions and poses a significant threat to millions of people living in high-risk flood zones. Three different sources of data that may work for my topic are the article “ 11 Interesting Facts About Climate Change” by Mulhern (2021), where I discovered that human activities are largely to blame for the adverse climate changes that have been witnessed in recent times. However, climate change also refers to natural shifts in temperature and weather patterns. Most of the climate change effects are reversible. It is therefore important that the issue of climate change be addressed in order to spur global efforts at reversing the negative outcomes of global warming.
Another source is “Climate Change and the Individual” by Rosso Grossman (2018), where I discovered that the most vulnerable populations are and will be the most affecte...
