The building codes applicable for this structure included the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as the building codes of the Chicago’s Department of Building. According to the NIST, the building codes we intended to impose the basic requirements for certain structures to enhance public safety, health, and safeguard the general welfare of the people. These objectives are achieved through the establishment of basic requirements that cover topics such as fire protection, material strength, ventilation and lighting, sanitation, and other matters that have been established to need ventilation. The development of the codes was based on the historical needs for regulation in the construction industry, particularly to safeguard the wellbeing of the community. While the codes under consideration are developed locally, they must be harmonized with a nationwide outlook of the building and construction sector.
While the codes are developed independently by local authorities, the common objectives are to safeguard the welfare of housing consumers. The codes also determine the time of the material to be used, and how structures should be designed. In Chicago, the building codes were introducing in 1875, four years after the massive fire that affected Chicago. The primary objective of the codes was to minimize fire accidents and diseases.
