* Introduction
Juvenile offenders commit a higher percentage of crimes compared to any other age group in America. Larceny is one of the most common juvenile crimes in the country. It involves taking into possession of someone’s property without their permission. There is no use of force in this crime. Most people term it as common or ordinary theft (McCarthy, 2016). I chose to look into this crime because of the nature of its occurrence. It occurs in the mildest of forms, which most people view as petty. Pocket picking or even shoplifting of snacks by young people could be of little harm, but if not controlled, these habits spiral into grander misdoings giving rise to violent thieves and criminals.
For a deed to qualify as larceny, it needs to meet a few elements. Some of these elements include the wrongful taking of personal property, lack of consent, and intent. The court should be able to ascertain that the offender had no right to possess the tangible item they took and that the item indeed belonged to another party. There should also be proof that the property owner did not permit or authorize the acquisition of their property by another permit. Moreover, the intent to rob and deprive the owner of their item should be clear. For example, if the accused confused the object with their own, this shows that they did not purposefully take away the property from its rightful owner.
Most offenders put on trial for this crime are aged between 10 and 17, with most of them being adolescents (Bindler, 2017). This common theft has numerous adverse effects on the community. Increased crime rate and lack of safety may arise as a result of larceny. Although no violence is involved in the act, there is a sense of insecurity in the community. Members of the community may tend to go home earlier than usual or avoid the streets and other theft-prone areas. A decline in community collaboration may also arise as a result of mistrust among community members. Unity depends on trust among people.
* Root causes and contributing factors
One of the main factors contributing to crime is peer pressure. As young people grow and develop, they feel the need to associate themselves with a group of people. Association gives them a sense of belonging, and therefore they go to great lengths to gain acceptance from the groups they want to be associated with. Involvement in petty theft and misbehavior often seems cool to teenagers and consequently gives them higher regard from their peers. Lack of guidance to teens creates room for them to be unruly and commit crimes since the desire to fit in is overwhelming at that age.
Financial strain and poverty also lead to theft. As of 1997, an average of 41% of those living below the level of poverty in the United States was aged below 18 years (Bindler, 2017). The lack of resources and essential amenities like food, clothing, and shelter leads to a significant number of adolescents down the path of crime.
