Introduction
Research involves structured investigation into scholarly materials and other sources to establish new facts and draw conclusions on a given research subject matter. A researcher conducting some research will pose different questions to the respondents on the research type. Therefore, a research question may be descriptive, causal, or relational, and each seeks to attain a certain objective.
Difference between descriptive and relational research questions
Descriptive research questions entail questions requiring definitional information for answers. The respondents' information explains the search term and other special events, and the questions are designed to address what could be happening or unravel what exists primarily. For example, public opinions are meant to describe a section of people's opinions on a particular topic, and it is descriptive. To know what will happen, a researcher will use descriptive questions to know the event's outcomes by obtaining answers that describe the event.
On the contrary, relational questions get formulated by a researcher in a study to help establish the relationship existing between two or more variables (Cook& Cook, 2016). For example, a poll held publicly to establish the proportion of females and males supporting a given political agenda would be a relational study. It would involve questions that weigh between female and male opinions.
Causal or comparison research questions
Causal research questions will help to determine if one variable causes an effect or a change to one or more other variables. Questions raised are meant to compare the effect that would occur if a variable got altered either by increase or a decrease. The comparison obtained would get described as either inverse or directly proportional.
Determining if research exists on the intended topic
A researcher needs to examine and justify that the prior research exists on the intended research topic. To achieve this objective, the research needs to carry out an evaluation based on the following criteria. First, the researcher needs to align the research problem with the research objectives and the questions. For example, in determining if the prior research aligns with the topic, a researcher will evaluate the study problem, study objectives, and verify whether the research questions formulated could help obtain the right information. Once a researcher gets satisfied with these parameters, they now know an alignment between the prior research and the intended research topic.
