Considering the circumstances and the preliminary workup, what type of anemia does Ms. A most likely have?
Anemia is a medical condition that occurs when the blood lacks efficient hemoglobin or red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a major part of red blood cells and holds oxygen. Abnormal or few blood cells, or abnormal or few hemoglobin will mean insufficient oxygen in the blood. Anemia symptoms occur due to insufficient oxygen in the organs of the body. There are varying types of Anemia caused by varying causes and requires different forms of treatment.
Ms. A is most likely suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia. This is a type of anaemia where the patient suffers iron deficiency after chronic loss of blood mostly as a result of excessive menstruation (Jacquelyn & Rachel, 2015). This type of anemia can also occur during pregnancy and to adolescents and children experiencing fast development spurts. Ms. A has expirienced more anemia symptoms during her menses meaning it is the excessive loss of hemoglobin that is triggering the diseases. These symptoms also show that that she is most likely suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia. The major signs of Iron Deficiency Anemia are lack of energy and tiredness, breath shortness, paleness, light-headedness, headache and heart palpitations.
For over 10 years, Ms. A has also been suffering from Menorrhagia and dysmenorrheal, which are menstrual disorders. Menorrhagia is abnormally long or heavy menstrual period. A woman with this disorder can soak through a number of tampons or sanitary pads in a single hour for up to seven days or more. Normally, Menorrhagia is longer than the normal menstrual period.
