Case Scenario:
A 6-year-old develops a high fever accompanied by violent vomiting and convulsions while at school. The child is rushed to a nearby hospital. The attending physician makes a diagnosis of meningitis and requests permission to initiate treatment from the parents. The child’s parents are divorced. The mother, who is not the biological parent of the child, has primary custody. She is a Christian Scientist who insists that no medical treatment be offered for religious reasons. The biological father, who resides in another state, is also contacted. He insists that treatment be given and seeks independent consultation from another physician.
Assignment:
In a formal, written paper of 800-1,200 words, answer the following questions:
What is the ethical dilemma here?
Describe the decision-making model you selected from your readings.
How would you resolve this dilemma using the model?
Include, at the end of your paper, a 200-word dialog in which you explain your decision to the family. (Remember to use language that the family would understand).

An ethical decision-making is a difficult condition that comprises an obvious psychological scuffle between ethical essentials in which to conform one would result in contravening another. The skill of Ethical decision-making requires learning cases and designing plans to face the moral issues. Physicians often have little control on medical situations that challenge them. In circumstances where the well-being of a patient is in danger, the hospital manages are to provide the patient what is of his best interest.
People often ask what they can do and how they can act. Ethics provides proper philosophies that tell the individuals what to do. Ethics are instructions for conduct, based on principles about how things should be. The statement in ethics comprises people and their capabilities, reasonable rules encompassing from this expectations and ideas of what is decent and necessary (Ferrell & Ferrell, 2010). The moral systems concern the individuals’ dos and should not in life, the ideologies and principles on which people relate. Physical therapy experts encounter challenges in making ethical decisions in the ever-increasing complex situations (Dolgoff et al., 2009). In the case scenario of the 6-year-old who requires medical attention, the physician requests for permission from the divorced parents and the guardian who is a Christian Scientist. The biological father insists treatment for the child and seeks independent consultation from another doctor. The physician is facing an ethical dilemma in making decision of handling the challenge of seeking permission to start treatment.

Practitioners struggle to create standards in decision making that provide guidelines in difficult environment. The danger to moral practice is self-interest. The advance in science such as mapping of human DNA is a challenge to morals because it raises issues on whether to do certain things (Ferrell & Ferrell, 2010)
The model for ethical decision-making in the scenario is the Kornblau and Starling. It provides a template to the physician and provides a guide for gathering data about the issue, the facts, identifying the involved parties and their interests. Questions that the practitioner has to answer are whether the situation is professional, private, business, economic, intellectual or societal. The physician determines if the issue of morals questioning arises and if violation of codes of the profession, or if it is the possible slur to the ethics, community or spiritual value. It identifies any legal breech like malpractice, or infringing of the profession act. Physicians collect information that will aid in making appropriate decisions through brainstorming for possible actions. Analysis of the course of the preferred deed by practitioner made.
