Introduction
The ethical dilemma is the case of a 20-year old Hispanic male who has been diagnosed with diabetes type 2, where the patient sought medical intervention there was emphasis on patient education to improve self-care including understanding how lifestyle choices may increase the risk of blood sugar levels rising. Despite there being family history of people living diabetes, the patient was not enthusiastic on patient education and believed he could manage by simply being more proactive. Lowering the hemoglobin A1C levels is associated with reducing the blood sugar levels and risk of diabetes complication, and self-care influences the A1C levels and diabetes outcomes (Shreck, et al., 2014). The four principles of clinical ethics: autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and justice are incorporated in the case.
Principle of respect for autonomy
Autonomy relates to the respect the decisions that the patient makes, where the patient acts out of his own free will as they have the freedom of choice.
