The Importance of Organizational Behavior to Leaders in the Health Care Sector

Case Study Instructions:

According to Brokowski (2016), “organizational behavior is an applied behavioral science that emerged from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, and economics” (pg. 3). Why is organizational behavior important to you as a health care leader? The U.S. health care system employs over 18 million individuals of various departments and sectors (Brokowski, 2016). Each department and sector has a diverse structure, which makes it vital that health care leaders possess the skills to communicate effectively with, motivate, and lead diverse groups of people within a large, dynamic, and complex industry (Brokowski, 2016).

Importance of Organization Behavior in Health Care

Organizational behavior refers to the academic study of how people interact within groups. The purpose of studying organizational behavior is to enable businesses to operate more effectively. Borkowski (2016) argued that organizational behavior is an applied behavioral science consisting of disciplines like sociology, psychology, political science, and anthropology. The concept provides an overview of effective behavior among employees, managers, and leaders in a business setting. It consists of how people relate, communicate, and work together towards a common goal. Since modern healthcare systems and organizations are more or less business-oriented, they too require the concepts of organizational behavior as means to efficacy and efficiency in delivering services. The current paper looks at the importance of organizational behavior to leaders in the health care sector by looking at the relevance of Hawthorn Studies, McGregor’s Theories X and Y, and Lewin’s Behavioral Study.

Application of Organizational Behavior in Health Care

Modern healthcare organizations provide healthcare services in the form of a business. In other words, while they are focused on prevention, treatment, and management of diseases, there is also a profit to be made out of it. Thus, the sector has business entities just like other sectors like manufacturing, transport, and education. Therefore, strategies, including consideration of organizational behavior, have significantly increased reliability, efficacy, and efficiency in these sectors (Emma, 2019). The health sector is a critical area in which reliability, efficiency, and efficacy are paramount because people's lives are at stake. Thus, organizational behavior is a necessary concept in healthcare because it ensures that patients and communities access quality services.

These quality services depend on the practical nature in which people working in the sector relate and communicate. According to Borkowski (2016), American health care employs over 18 million individuals in various departments and sectors. In other words, each department or sector has a diverse group of individuals, all working towards a common goal. Therefore, the streamlining of organizational behavior with the sector is necessary to attain a common goal. A hospital, for instance, may need to address multiple internal issues, including employee hierarchy, conflict management, negotiation & team building models, and staff diversity. Addressing such issues is part of what is encompassed under organizational behavior.
