Dementia refers to a cluster of disorders characterized by progressive and poor mental functioning (Russell et al., 2016). The condition is caused by neurons loss in certain parts of the brain especially the cortical area (O'Shea and Siobhan, 2009). Hence, causing loss of cognitive ability which is also accompanied by deterioration of social behavior and emotional control. The patients of dementia suffer from symptoms such as difficulty following the flow of a chat. Trouble in recalling the names of new acquaintances. Frequently forgetting events, misplacing or losing things, disorientation, wandering, night-time wakefulness, hallucination, language difficulties and failure to perform daily activities (Cahill and Vanessa, 2010).
Individual's needs
The disorder can weaken the health system of an individual to the extent that one is unable to control their body. The challenges they face render them unable to care for themselves. For instance, persons with the condition find it hard to stick to nutritional instructions. It comes as of the result of misremembering. Individuals under this category can forget to eat. Poor eating or incorrect food varieties can directly contribute to declining in one's health problems (Alzheimer's Association, 2009). Thus, they need nutritional care. The caretaker should promote nutrition and hydration. Ensuring appropriate and timely meals or drinks (Cahill and Vanessa, 2010). The patients also deserve ample time to express themselves.
The disorder deprives them power to recognize or even take care of a pain. Hence, the necessity of assistance in pain management. Thus, it requires a person to ease the distress caused by the pain and help the patient enjoy a worth life. Also, it requires one to routinely assess and treat the pain effectively. Dementia victims find difficulties in engaging in meaningful activities (O'Shea and Siobhan, 2009). Moreover, it is a critical element in caring for dementia personnel.
