Descriptive Statistics Part II: Central Tendency and Variability
1 Briefly discuss the concept of mode, mean, median. What is it? How is it calculated? When would we use each one?
* Mean
The mean is also loosely referred to as the average. The arithmetic mean or simply the mean is calculated by summing up all the values and then dividing the result by the total number the total number of quantities available (Regentsprep.org, 2012). The total number of quantities within the set of values is referred to as the frequency. Therefore, the arithmetic mean is calculated by summing all the values within the set then dividing the result by the total frequency. The mean is also a measure of central tendency in a data having no extreme value or outlier. Unlike the mode, the mean is unique in that there can only be one value as an answer for the mean. The arithmetic mean is used in comparing different data sets. However, according to Regentsprep.org (2012), the main setback of the arithmetic mean is that it is affected by outliers (extreme values).
* Median
The median refers to the value that is in the middle of other values or list. Before determining the median value, all the values are arranged in either ascending or descending order. Once this has been done, then the value that is in the midst of other values is the median value. It should be noted that, for odd number of values in a list, the median value is simply the value that lies in the midst of the list of values. However, if the total number of values in a list is even, then the median is determined by summing up the two values in the middle of the list, and then dividing the result by two. The median is used in describing the middle value in a data set having an outlier or extreme value (Regentsprep.org, 2012). Unlike the arithmetic mean, the median is not much by the out...
