They have an obligation to provide humane and compassionate care to patients while adhering to their specific field’s code of ethics. Sometimes, healthcare professionals are privy to discussions between family members regarding end-of-life issues. In some instances, a healthcare facility may be in charge of providing information about advance directives to patients. The case involved a series of court appearances and presentations of new cases presenting wrangles between the patient's parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, and husband, Michael Schiavo. After diagnosing Terri's condition, Michael Schiavo was appointed the legal guardian. Due to her condition, Mrs. Schiavo underwent the percutaneous endoscopy gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement. Some tie after the medical specialists confirmed that Terri's condition was irreversible, Mr. Michael suggested the removal of the PEG tube (Perry, Churchill, & Kirshner, 2005).
On the other hand, the parents proposed that their daughter would survive and the tube should not be removed. On the other hand, her husband was aware that there were no chances of reversing the condition; hence the best option was to remove the tube since he did not want to experience more of her suffering. Finally, the court ruled in favor of Michael Schiavo, stating that the parents did not provide sufficient proof regarding their claims about the events revolving around their daughter's condition.
