He remembered how he used to count on others in his office to brainstorm new ideas and enjoyed the friendly banter at break time in the cafeteria. In recent months things have changed. Lester wasn’t sure how the conflict had become so bad, and that wasn’t because of any lack of consideration. Day and night the thoughts of work seemed to plague him. He couldn’t escape the weight of what was happening at the office. Assessing level of conflict
At level 1, there is a conflict between Amanda and Hillary and the groups on opposing camps. On this level, the people cannot differentiate the problem from the group and there is no trust between the groups. Amanda and Hillary are communicating through e-mails despite working on the same project. At level 2 there is no agreement on the cause of the problem for those supporting Amanda and Hillary, and this is characterised with increased mistrust as well as personalization of the problems.
At level 3, there are various issues still unresolved including the source of the conflict, take more hardliner stands. This resulted to low cohesion even in teams, as different factions could not support the other. Each faction was intent on proving that there are the best in a manner similar to a competition. Since Amanda was promoted to be the program manager in the PR division, she has been paired with Hillary to work on the same project. Since the two are archrivals, there is a need to focus on ways to lessen tension as both desire to outdo each other. At level 4, Amanda and Hillary prefer to have group validation as they cannot make certain decisions on their own. It is better to deal with conflict at level 1, but since the warring parties continue feuding mediation is the best option deal with the conflict.
