The higher education course has been a source of knowledge which will be essential in accomplishing my professional practice and career goals.
Part A: Social, Economic, and Political Context
The social, economic and political contexts of the community affect the students’ academic success. Thus, applying them in professional practice can shape students’ performance. The social context involves the interaction between social groups within the community (Wales, Magee, & Nicolai, 2016). Students need a safe environment where they can interact, and professionally, I can encourage students to participate in interpersonal interactions through group discussions. The economic context covers the income levels of community members, which then affects student’s access to education (Wales, Magee, & Nicolai, 2016). As a profession, understanding this context will allow me to focus more on providing solutions so that all students can access higher education, regardless of their economic background. The political context involves the power dynamics involved not only in governing higher education institutions but also in advocating for students’ needs. Integrating the latter in my professional practice will ensure that student needs are heard and met, thus enhancing students' success.
Part B: Creating an Educational Organization that Facilitates Professional Development
Providing education is a responsibility that cannot be undertaken single-handedly. Thus, there is always a need to create an educational organization and community that facilitates professional development so that teachers can improve learners’ outcomes. Kalman, Tynjala, and Skaniakos (2019) indicate that establishing professional learning communities is one way of ensuring that teachers provide learners with more student-centered learning support. Thus, I will create a professional learning community by inviting my fellow tutors to a weekly meeting where we share our knowledge and teaching skills and collaborate on new, improved ways of teaching to improve learners’ outcomes. This will create a professional development relationship between the participants. It will also ensure that we are always looking for new ways to improve our teaching skills and offer the best support to our students so that they can achieve their academic goals.
Part C: Theories of Organizational Management and Leadership Principles
Creating a safe, effective and successful learning environment requires strong organizational management and leadership skills that are student-centered. Higher education leaders need to make decisions based on the theories of management and leadership so that learners’ outcomes can be improved. One of the theories in leadership and management that would be effective in establishing a successful learning environment is the theory of situational leadership.
