The literature review highlighted some very important issues that are useful to both my professional practice and educational training program. As a member of the nursing profession, I have a role in improving the quality of nursing care. The best approach to doing this is through evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice is informed by literature reviews as it provides insights on what has been done and has worked in the past so that the same can be applied in nursing care. The majority of studies in my literature review indicate that mental health among college students is of great concern. Particularly, through the literature review, I have identified some of the strategies that have been effective in combating mental health issues in colleges. These include the use of peer support programs and awareness enhancing programs (Pace, Silk, Nazione, Fournier, & Collins-Eaglin, 2016; Vidourek & Burbage, 2019; Keyes, n.d.). My professional practice and educational training program put me in a position where I can apply the evidence-based information to help college students deal with mental health issues.
From the literature review, I have learned that stigmatization is still a major hindrance to the help-seeking behaviors of students (Pace, Silk, Nazione, Fournier, & Collins-Eaglin, 2016; Vidourek & Burbage, 2019; Kamimura, et al., 2018). I have also learned that many students understand mental health issues but lack knowledge of the available mental health services. As a member of the nursing profession, I now better understand the need to normalize mental health issues not only in colleges but also in communities close to me. Once mental health has been normalized at the community grassroots levels, students will go to college knowing that it is okay to seek help and no one will judge them or treat them differently for seeking help.
The information from the literature review is especially important concerning my four concentrations. First, I can use this information while analyzing case studies in post-secondary settings. The information suggests some of the issues that I may encounter while going through case studies in mental health issues, as well as the role of higher education leadership in making and implementing policy changes. Second, the information sheds more light on the need to include and accommodate students with mental health problems in the education curriculum by providing them with support services. Third, the information points to the need for more comprehensive programs, both academic and non-academic, that will support students to achieve their academic goals. Fourth, the information from the literature review points out the need for funding for mental health programs. College administrators and leaders need to have better plans, especially budgetary plans, to enhance the quality of mental health programs in campuses.
