Guidelines for the Language Sample Analysis

1.Informal Language Sample (100 points)

  • Part One: Background - Transcription & Scoring 40 points)
  • Part Two: Discussion/Write-up (40 points)
  • Part Three: IEP Page 3 Performance Level Summary and Final Presentation (20 points)

Once you have selected a student for your language sample, you will conduct a standardized assessment of oral narrative skills (comprehension and production) and transcribe and score a language sample using the Test of Narrative Language- Second Edition (TNL-2nd Ed.).  Specific materials for conducting the sample will be provided for you. Standardized scores will not be reported but a description and interpretation of the results will be explained in a write-up format

2.Test of Narrative Language-Second Edition (TNL-2) by Ronald B. Gillam and Nils A. Pearson

You will fill out the following information.  Each section should require 1-2 paragraphs.   You will submit a copy of one transcription from one of the narrative production tests with the MLU-Word account.

Part One. Background Information – Scored the Protocol (40 points) 

1_A. Background (10. points) Provide basic background information for your student (age, grade, SPED eligibility, LEP or ELD level, etc.).  Also describe some the family background information if possible, language(s) spoken at home and/or other pertinent information. If parents have mentioned concerns as related to school performance, grades, participation in class, attendance, tardiness, behavior(s) and any other information.   

1_B. Family Interview (10 points): COST or ITALK information should be included here based on the parent/family interview.  You can provide this information in a descriptive narrative format. Here you want to summarize the parents’ concerns or comments about their child’s language skills.  Think of considering, strengths (+), challenges (-) and emerging skills (+/-). 

1.C. Scored Protocol, Transcription and MLU-count (20 points total)

Summarize a table from the scored protocol in a table. You will just provide the RAW SCORES only. There is NO need to report standardized scores.

Sarah is intermediate in English Language Development (ELD). This level means she has a basic understanding of English but may struggle with more complicated assignments. This information helps create interventions and strategies matching her language proficiency and a supportive learning environment. Family history shows that Sarah primarily speaks English. This context shows Sarah's language exposure outside of school. According to research, the home linguistic environment affects vocabulary acquisition and language competency (Kluczniok & Mudiappa, 2018). During the Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language (CASL) family interview, Sarah's parents voiced concerns about her language-related school performance.
