For the Unit II Case Study, you will focus on fires and fire prevention in your community, specifically structural fires and wildfires. Start by conducting research around your community/location for examples of mitigation and fire prevention, such as sprinkler systems, emergency fire exits, or fire hydrants. Take photographs of what you find so that you can show your professor what your area has done to address the issue of fires.
Using what you learned about your community and what you learned about past fires from this course, write a case study, a minimum of four pages in length, that addresses the following points:
Explain what has been done with regard to mitigation, recovery, and/or response efforts within your community. When looking for potential threats, consider wildlands, explosions, or home fires, and, for mitigation, examples include building codes and fireproofing.
Explain who conducted these efforts and the vulnerabilities they faced in their community, and include the role these individuals or groups play with mitigating, responding, and/or recovering from the risk.
Examine the causes and recovery efforts of at least one past fire that either occurred in your community or that you have researched. Explain the causes and contributing factors of this fire.
Examine the vulnerability in a larger context. Considering past fires, either in your community or surrounding areas, do you feel your community has done enough to prevent future fires? Why, or why not? What recommendations can you offer to your community to address future risks?
Consider vulnerability theory and use it to help you explain how your community may be vulnerable to fire, followed by systems theory to help you discuss the systems (organizations, policies, procedures, etc.) in place to mitigate the fire hazard.
Your paper should be a minimum of four pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. You are required to use a minimum of three outside sources as part of your case study. All sources, including the textbook, must be cited and referenced according to APA guidelines.
Additionally, include at least four visual aids/images that support your content (one 4-by-4-inch image per page maximum). Please incorporate those into your paper in APA format. Click here for steps on how to resize the image.

What has been done in Kansas City with regards to mitigation, recovery, and response efforts?
Climate analysts document that large wildfires in Kansas are set to increase over the coming years. The conclusion is informed by climatic changes, which are raising the temperatures in the area, while decreasing rainfall, especially in the dry months, exposing the city to unprecedented cases of wildfires. As a town that has grappled with over six thousand vegetation-related fires, it has developed the following mitigation, recovery, and response measures to deal with these types of fires.
One of the mitigation measures implemented in Kansas City is watching out for activities that could spark a fire. According to Spicer (2021), 90% of all wildfires in Kansas are started by people intentionally and unintentionally. Therefore, residents should avoid activities that could lead to a fire breakout, including dragging chains behind vehicles, improperly disposing of cigarettes, being keen when setting fires, and playing with fireworks. Avoiding various farming activities such as bailing hay and clearing farmlands through the fire can also prevent the fires. Other effective measures are notifying neighbors when intending to start a fire and arming yourself with fire management instruments (Office of the State Fire Marshal, 2021).
Response to wildfires begins with informing and the deployment of the Kansas City Fire department. Evacuation orders are instituted, other first responders are notified, their assistance is requested, and fighting the fire and rescue begins. Also, the injured receive first aid and are transported to health care facilities. Recovery efforts comprise continued efforts to put the fire out, documenting the response activities and resources utilized, and preparing a status report on the process of responding and stopping the fire (Valick & Tracy, 2017, pp. 195-196).
Personnel that conducted these efforts and their vulnerabilities
The personnel that conducted the mitigation measures were Kansas City residents and the fire department. The city residents kept an eye on activities that could predispose them to fires. The Kansas Fire department was instrumental in creating awareness of ways the residents can avoid the wildfires. The Kansas Fire Department, the Kansas Emergency Medical Services, and the police carried out response and recovery efforts. The firefighters and the police conducted emergency evacuations while the firefighters devised strategies to fight the fire and fought the blaze. Also, they completed an overhaul on the fire incident and prepared the incident report. The emergency Kansas Emergency Medical personnel offered first aid to those affected by the fire and linked them with hospitals for further treatment.
Firefighters and emergency medical service personnel face numerous vulnerabilities when responding to wildfires. According to Britton, Lynch, Ramirez, Torney, Buresh, and Peek-Asa (2013, pp 339-340), these people are at risk of burns, heat-related sicknesses, injuries, inhaling smoke, and falls. Additionally, continued exposure to high heat exposes them to physical tiredness, rhabd...
