Workers act in solidarity when in unions to get fair treatment and better compensation, while also protecting themselves against arbitrary management actions (Dessler, 2015). At other times, the staff may suffer low morale, especially when they face job losses. Even though, union security and benefits are the main aims of unions there are drawbacks to unionization. The self-directed teams are less likely to thrive since unionization stifles creativity by focusing too much on team performance (Pearson Education, 2013). Additionally, the more creative hardworking workers are unlikely to achieve career growth fast enough, since unions must first consider the performance of other group members and assess whether there is fair treatment (Pearson Education, 2013).
15-13:From what you know about UPS, what do you think would make the union believe that the company was ripe for being organized?
The case for having unionized workers is that it helps to improve their well being, as unions protect the rights and make it easier to negotiate for higher compensation. The situation at UPS requires unionization for the personnel dealing with parcel delivery. The company did not relive jobs to some of the workers, but simply gave them more responsibilities, but their days were also restructured to reflect changes in their work schedules. Unions workers tend to receive higher pay since unions can negotiate for collective bargaining agreements. The bulk of workers are typically in the lower ranks, and collective bargaining needs to take into account how unions affect the workers’ job prospects at UPS.
Unionization at UPS will depend more on job position, duties and responsibilities, whereby the management is more likely to be flexible. For people in the higher management positions, there is likelihood that they would receive more than their unionized counterparts, and they have more flexibility when negotia...
