Each employee therefore works 40 hours a week. She has been noticing that some of her employees come in the morning already stressed from pre-work home duties or come in looking as if they are still asleep. In both of these situations she believes that these employees are less productive than those who come in bright and cheery.
She has spoken with you, her Human Resources (HR) manager, about how they might improve the situation…. Like strong coffee for the sleepy ones and meditation for the stressed-out ones. You have just finished studying an OB course that discussed alternate flexible work time arrangements.
Explain two of these alternative work hour arrangements that she might be able to use. (4 marks)

From the case study, it is evident that the employees are overwhelmed with responsibilities in the organization. This is because these employees work 40 hours per week and they are given half an hour for lunch. From this time arrangement, the employees will likely be stressed while others will be sleepy during the day. As a Human Resource Manager, I can offer two solutions to improve the situation in the company. After studying the OB course, I would propose the following as alternate flexible work time arrangements for the company.
1 First I would like to propose a compressed workweek. This means that employees will be required to work more hours on two days of the week. The rest of the three days, employees will be given fewer hours to work. Additionally, they should be given two breaks per day. The organization should add 30 more minutes to the lunch hour break.
2 The organization should also come up with activities that will keep the employees active. The company should introduce evening counselling session’s fort those employees who might seem stressed.
Reasons
Compressing the work week will assist the employees to manage their time effectively. Employees will be able to improve their productivity because giving them fewer hours to work on certain days of the week will improve their concentration. Additionally, giving employees two breaks per day will give them more time to interact with others and share their experiences in the organization. Adding an extra 30 minutes to the lunch tome break will assist the employees to relax and ease the tension they might have experienced.
