Strengths of a Decentralized Approach to Training
A key strength of a decentralized approach to training managers and hourly staff is increased responsiveness due to the close proximity of the target audience. From the case study, it is easy to deduce that both Dunkin’ Donuts and Domino’s Pizza have multiple locations scattered across the globe. Hence, a decentralized approach enables both companies to easily react to the needs of their specific target audience and make instant revisions to the same effect.
Another key strength is the fact that a decentralized training approach is sensitive to the specific needs of a specific line of business, which has a direct impact on how goals are set and achieved, and also promotes creativity. In essence, decentralized training promotes elevated autonomy of lines of business to creatively determine their goals and effectively solve problems. Ultimately, autonomy in determining certain aspects of training guarantees increased performance through employee motivation.
Shortcomings of a Decentralized Approach to Training
A common shortcoming of decentralized training is the lack of consistency and standardization. This is primarily because decentralized training allows individual business units the leeway to handle training as they fit. Therefore, while some units may put enough emphasis in the quality of training, others may fail to realize this mark of quality, thereby creating inconsistency in regards to the overall quality of service provided by the company.
