Write a 7-9 page paper analyzing the questions in paragraph form, APA format. Each question should be answered in about one page in length. (The key terms that are bold in your textbook) Case Study Overview: (This is a fictitious company and it is not a real company) HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE MOTEL MAIDS? Western Motels is part of a franchise operation with 12 locations in the San Diego area. For the last several years, employee turnover, especially among the lower paid workers, has been a major problem. The turnover rate for maids alone reached the level of three employees per month per motel, representing a staggering 45 percent on an annual basis. The maid is probably the most important representative of the motel, even though the maid is seldom seen by the guests. It is the way in which the job duties are performed that determines whether a guest will return to the motel for a second stay. Repeat customers make a motel's reputation-especially through word-of-mouth recommendations, the best and the least expensive kind of advertising. Not only are these motels faced with the expense of hiring, processing, and bonding employees, but low morale has produced a low-grade, careless approach to the job. In several instances, a complete refund of room charges has been necessary. In addition, maids have often quit without notice, and the cost to train a new employee has increased. The maids for Western Motels were being paid the top wages for similar employment, even though those wages were still in the bottom quarter of wages in the area. The working conditions seemed good. The maids were allowed one meal per shift at the motel's coffee shops and to use the pool facilities during their off-hours at four of the locations. The managers tried to interview the workers who had left their employ, but they could get no useful information form them. They spoke in generalities, such as "I'm just tired of working here." Finally, the operators approached the franchise's main office in Phoenix, and a general meeting of the concerned managers was called. You were chosen as the franchise representative to the conference. The meeting was held over a 2-day period at one of the San Diego locations. Only 7 of the 12 motels sent representatives. One manager claimed that the whole thing was "just a waste of time and money." After lunch on the first day, your group sat down to discuss the situation. It was the general consensus of the group that efforts should be made to try to increase the commitment of the maids to their jobs and to the company. Personal commitment to and pride in their jobs seemed to be the ingredients most lacking, but how could these feelings be created for the motel maids? 1. Put yourself in the role of the motel maid. What physical changes could be made to enhance the job? 2. Personal identity and pride in the job should be given top priority in redesigning the position. What changes would you suggest to enhance the employee's personal identity? 3. If you are the leader of this organization, what style of leadership do you think would work best and why? 4. Using the motivational theories that you have learned, explain how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation play a role in this case? What theories do you think apply the best to the scenario and why? 5. What role does organization culture play in the case? How would you describe the organizational culture based on what you have read in your book? 6. How does perception affect communication? What are the barriers to effective communication in the case and how can communication be improved? 7. If you were the organizational behavior consultant, what recommendations would you suggest based on what you have read and researched. Managing an organization has never been an easy task. There are always hurdles that the mangers of the organization have to go through in order to effectively manage an organization. The mode of management in an organization determines the culture of the organization. On the other hand, the culture determines the organizational behavior within the establishment. This essay looks at the manner of handling organizational behavior using a case study.

All over the world, there are people looking for job openings. Year in year out, the universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning do churn out graduates who are qualified in various fields. Once these people hit the job market, they are usually eager to land their first jobs. They also have much zeal in looking for job placements. On being hired, these individuals are usually very productive in the first months of their tenure. The theory of diminished returns then seems to apply where the employees lose their zeal for work and in some cases even quit from their job placements. An investigation into organizational behaviors implies that there are various factors that contribute to such behaviors. There are extrinsic factors which emanate from outside the organization and are hard to control. There are also intrinsic factors which thrive from within the organization. At times, leadership techniques as well as personality characteristics and differences among the individuals also contribute to this characteristic of organizations. This essay seeks to address the issue of organizational behavior using the case of Western Motel. Through the issues laid on the table regarding the motel, this essay will look at the possible physical changes that can be implemented in an organization in order to ensure employee satisfaction and retention. It will look at the different leadership styles and how they can be applied to motivate the employees. Similarly, different methods of employee motivations will be highlighted. These factors will ultimately lead to a discussion on the organizational culture. As such, this essay simply seeks to establish how an organization can be run with minimum wrangles and maximum cooperation among the various shareholders of the organization.
Some of the physical changes that can be done in the motel to enhance the job include the renovation of the premises. As explained in the case study, the West Motel is a franchise of a chain of motels. As such, there is a possibility that the working conditions are not as classy as those in the other branches of the motel. This comes out clearly in the study where it is claimed that the working conditions seem to be good. This means that there is no certainty and, therefore, there is a possibility that the maids disappear simply because they are not satisfied with the working conditions. For this reason, the motel should seek to improve its infrastructural facilities. For instance, the appearance of the building should be appealing so as to attract more people. The more the clients served, the higher the employee satisfaction and the higher the rate of retention. Secondly, the working conditions seem to have a great impact on the motivation of the workers. As such, improving the facility could go a long way to achieve the objective of job satisfaction. Of course, no one likes working in an area that is prone to ridicule and mimicry. For instance, the rooms can be fitted with air conditioners, T.V sets, and the outside environment should be well kempt. This can be assured through constant pruning of the hedges and proper cleaning up. Improving the outside appearance of the organization could make the maids have a feeling that they do not serve in a lowly place...
