Struggle Against Colonial Domination
The Wretched of the Earth by Fratz Fanon demonstrates how Africans suffered at the hands of colonizers. The writer gives a clear view of how decolonization caused harm in Africa, particularly in Algeria. Though the book seems exaggerated, what happened is far much worse than what is in the book.
The racial abuse of the colonizers towards the Africans was mainly to demean them. The use of insulting vocabulary, them not sharing residential places, and the ideology that decolonization is good towards the Africans was to make them feel less superior. These practices show how colonizers were determined to ruin originality of African cultures and make them embrace the western culture.
In contrary to how the Africans got treated, colonizers could have done better. They should have used appropriate methods for decolonization rather than barbaric techniques, which could have built a long-term relationship between natives and foreigners. Though decolonization succeeded, it brought too much hatred. The use of violence was like a ticking time bomb that ended up unifying natives, thus driving the foreigners away.
Even though the book acknowledges anticolonial violence as a significant method for nations’ self-realization and construction of national identity, there are modern methods that are working. The use of excessive force could not have succeeded in every country. With violence, the foreigners were soon going to get outgunned by the natives, as it was the case in Ethiopia and Liberia that ended up not being colonized. Exploring new techniques of ...
