Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Book Review
The story is set in a time of simplicity and form, which I find most striking about it. The author, Philip K. Dick, includes 2 main views of the characters: J.R. Isidore and Rick Deckard. Another compelling feature of the Androids is having a high-brow, which gives the uniqueness it has compared to other books. It is very enjoyable, especially because the story is a thriller pondering on reality’s nature in a quicker way.
After the terminus of the World War, every citizen was given an android servant, and 6 of them ran away to reach Earth, causing a lot of casualties in their journey. Rick Deckard, who is a skilled hunter, kills and destroy androids for a certain amount.
Rick, together with his wife Iran, keeps an electric sheep hidden in their home’s balcony. A real one costs more than the electric version, but he still wants to have the real sheep. As the story starts to unfold, readers learn that 2 things need to happen for his wish to come true. He would have to retire a lot of ‘Andys’ and Dave Holden needs to disappear. A lot of these are gone in the 2nd chapter, which gives a little light to the novel’s plot. It has a touch of religion, but even if it is derived from Christianity a bit, there is a lot of modernity, making it appealing to any generation of readers. In addition, there are a lot of different interactions with a certain level of drama, a lot of obstacles, and a tense act.
Even if the book is short, Dick has the ability to fit a complex story, even if it means bringing in a new concept that is focused on machines that let you use the happiness of others to feel comfortable. The social system’s drawback is when Rick uncovers what hinders happiness, he needs to choose between contentment and his responsibility to people – to give a part of his happiness to them, which diminishes the emotions he experiences. They give him confusion and self-doubt, making him question his ability to continue hunting, and his humanity.
In the final scene, after going through an encounter with Mercer, he does not struggle with the emotions he goes through anymore, and learned to completely accept them. His experiences have already taught him a lot about himself and made him see the complexity of emotions, which he could not accept at the beginning of the story. This is the very aspect that makes him a human being. He had always thought it was androids do not have empathy, which all humans have, which makes the 2 different. Although, once he has gone through the challenge of this certain assignment that readers relate to, he is unable to realize what the difference means. So, in the last scene, his wife gets rejected by him when she offers to dial a particular mood and then sleeps peacefully, accepting the emotions he has even if he only likes some of them.
The scenes give the novel’s persuasive theme wherein Rick is married, Rachel is one of the escaped androids, and readers discover that the replicants have silently planted themselves in society. Even the TV figure watched by everyone is one of them, but hides it.
