The novel is characterized by its unflinching and memorable exposure of racial intolerance, high morality price, and human condition among others. On a personal view, the author has totally challenged apartheid`s political orthodox, conventions, themes and formal architecture as formerly portrayed by other Afrikaans authors. The story revolves around the main character, Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland), who is a white schoolteacher from Johannesburg during state-sanctioned apartheid and the gloomy periods of intolerance.
