Who is Judge Holden?
Blood Meridian, by Cormac McCarthy, centers around Judge Holden, who excels in everything he tries to accomplish. Being the antagonist in the story, Judge holden possesses a dangerous character that portrays evil and violence. Consequently, Judge Holden is the representative of the evil inside humankind, through his thought against God, crafty character, and devil appearance, which always stand by our side and convince people to act toward violence and selfishness
Firstly, Judge Holden possesses a power of words that enables him to lure individuals into doing things that he wishes. This is done by inducing people to act violently and follow their cruel desire, which lays deeply inside their hearts. For instance, Holden lures SGT Aguilar with money to keep the gang away from the problem at hand. Furthermore, he also makes the decisions in the gang through his influence on Glanton. It is also evident that the gang members are tricked into falling in line with his belief system. Webster seems to understand this with his belief that the Judge will go round in circles hence cannot win against him in a match of wits. Another example involves his notable characteristic involves his belief in young children due to their pureness in the heart. Therefore, he aims at recruiting them to do his dirty work. He is quoted saying, “At a young age, said the Judge, they should be put in a pit with wild dogs. They should be set to puzzle out from their proper clues one of three doors that does not harbor wild lions” (McCarthy 146)...
