Text of “What I Will” by Suheir Hammad
* Hammad begins her poem with a resounding No. An answer that she gives to a force which is not named. Statements like I will not dance to your war drum. I will not lend my soul nor my bones to your war help to drive the point that she is saying no to something abstract.
* She also talks about death which is the consequence of dancing to the force’s war drums. Saying that I know that beat. It is lifeless. These are statements that help to indicate what Hammad is saying about the war because one major consequence of war is death.

This is a statement that makes it known that she is serious with her life and knows its worth. So, she will dance and resist and dance and persist and dance. Here, she is making her stand known.

* He then continues to talk about how he had to live while withholding information about his status. However, this does not work because soon, one develops some courage and comes out as undocumented and queer.
* In the next section, Daniel introduces himself and gives a brief history o...
