Book Review: The Confession by John Grisham
Question 1
Discuss what evidence is used to charge and convict Donte Drumm of Nicole Yarber's murder. Give specific details and facts from your reading. (One page)
The confession is one of the best novels and it is critically important because it expounds more in the criminal justice system, how it works and how it makes various errors and how people can be executed as a result. In the book the Schroeder’s are very good people until the day they find themselves in direct contact with a murders and the death penalty that no one had any idea about. The author states that “Texas was among the several states with well developed case law that allowed prosecution in murder cases where there was no definitive evidence that the murder had indeed occurred, a dead body was not required.” (Grisham, 147)
In this case even Travis Boyette the real murderer of Yarber, who was familiar with the criminal justice system could not process that the conviction of Donte Drumm for raping and killing went far (Grisham, 9). Donte Drumm is an innocent man who faces capital punishment. The case forces readers to consider their own views and stand on death penalty. Donte Drumm is convicted for nine years for having been convicted wrongfully on the killing of Nicole Yarber. He was football player but his hopes came to an end when he headed to prison for murder. The real murderer was Travis Boyette was forty four year old man who was suffering from a brain tumor (Grisham, 200). He had a history of criminal activities and had spent half of his life in prison. He later confessed to the crime to Reverend Keith in Topeka, Kansas.
The reason as to why Donte was convicted was after Joey Gamble who was rejected by Nicole Yarber took out his anger on him. Joey tipped off the police officers with an anonymous phone call about the murder of Yarber stating that Donte Drumm had committed the murder. Joey stated that Donte had grabbed Nicole outside the mall and tossed her over the bridge on route 244 and her corpse were at the bottom of the red river. When Donte was questioned by the police officers, he signed away his Miranda rights because he was naïve but he does it in good faith. He confessed to the crime and admitted that he tossed the body of Nicole Yarber into the red river. This is a catalyst that sent him on the death row for nine years.
