Book Review-The People’s Republic of Amnesia; Tiananmen Revisited by Louisa Lim
The Tiananmen Square in China makes for one of the countries marvels in architecture whose original intention was to symbolize the nation’s or rather the ruling communist party regime’s prosperity. Tiananmen Square was, in essence, a representation of the country’s greatness under the communist rule and thus a doubling as a source of the nation’s pride in its social, political, and economic ideology. Occupation of the same Square in 1989 for approximately seven weeks makes for one of the country’s tragic events in the nation’s history following the bloody military breakdown on the protesters on 4th June. The government’s response to use the People’s Liberation Army to crack down on the protesters resulted in a massive loss of lives, injuries, and imprisonment of individuals deemed as posing a threat to the communist regime. The occurrences of the day’s event remain sealed in both the victim’s and perpetrator’s memories as both appear to be complacent to the government’s resolve to maintain secrecy over the matter. Renowned journalist and author Louisa Lim goes against the unspoken rule of silence over the matter that badly taints the ruling Communist Party’s regime in China by giving a voice to both the victim’s and perpetrator’s of the tragedy in her book, The People’s Republic of Amnesia, Tiananmen Revisited. The 2014 Oxford Press publication revisits the atrocities committed by the Chinese Communist regime of the time in an effort to awaken both the old and current generations to the reality of the country’s past and thus raising awareness over its historical injustices. A review of Louisa Lim's book, The People’s Republic of Amnesia, Tiananmen Revisited creates an understanding of the tragic event, its repercussions, and the society’s selective ignorance of its government’s historical injustices and the latter’s attempts to rewrite history with regards to the matter.
The People’s Republic of Amnesia, Tiananmen Revisited makes use of pictorial illustrations in developing the book, which further makes use of people’s accounts of the events as they took place. The author begins by providing a chronological account of the events that took place leading to the brutal crackdown and massacre of students and other civilians at the Tiananmen Square as well as in the city of Chengdu in Southwest China. The National Public Radio journalist provides personal accounts of the dreaded June 4th events coupled with pictorial eviden...
