Review of China and Vietnam Wars
The China and Vietnam wars took place in 1950-1975. China took part in both wars, and the Vietnamese and western writers have ignored the importance of their participation. Lack of Chinese archival sources has prevented the treatment of Beijing from the western scholarship of the Indochina conflict. Since there are no studies conducted on China's relations, this book redresses this deficiency by drawing on fresh Chinese documents to present the full-length treatment of the evolution of the Sino-DRV relationship between two Indochina wars, focusing on its strategic, political and military aspects. This book also attempts to answer the many questions about China's participation in the Indochina war.
The first chapter highlights the role of human agency in the making of history (Zhai 2000). To begin with is Mao, whose ideas and visions were used to set the framework for China's Vietnam policy. Then there were Mao's associates who fully implemented his diplomatic and military decisions on Vietnam. Beijing-Hanoi relationship which was made up of cooperation, contradictions, agreements, and confrontation is also discussed. In the 1950s Vietnam confronted their enemies who were French and the Americans.
Chapter two discusses the Siege of Dien Bien Phu to Geneva. This happened in 1953 when the Viet Minh 308th division moved to the north towards Dien Bien Phu. In 1954, the CMAG planned an attack to Dien Bien Phu before the French established their positions. The Chinese advisers released a human wave attack against the French (Zhai 2000). The French moved faster and took positions in Dien Bien Phu before the Viet Minh divisions who ended up losing. China furnished the PAVN with antiaircraft guns in order to break the French air superiority and to get into the Dien Bien Phu airstrip. As the battle and campaigns continued, preparations for peaceful negations at Geneva were underway.
They agreed to form two artillery divisions which would be composed of Chinese troops that fought in Korea. The units were to be trained and receive weapons after a two week period. In order to unify the Chinese territories, Mao organized a conference in Geneva to enable the Chinese people to recover from the war. The Chinese people attended the conference in good numbers. This helped to reduce their tensions through consultations and negotiations. After attending the conference, China understood the conditions in Laos and Cambodia maintaining no contacts with the royal governments of Vientiane and Phnom Penh.
After the conclusion of the Geneva conference, China desired a peaceful and harmonious international environment in order to major on domestic reconstruction. The Chinese people wanted reconciliation for the good of their country — the begun by supporting the Cambodian and Laotian neutralism(Zhai 2000). China also gave support to reconstruct the north and unify the south. Beijing also was willing to offer support to China in its reconstruction. After the conference, Chinese advises helped the VWP in...
