Course Name Professor’s Name University City, State Date of Submission China-Africa Cultural Differences in Business Relations The last decade has been characterized by rapid industrial growth in China. This has necessitated the need for China to trade with Africa to obtain raw materials for industries such as oil and minerals. To promote this trade, the government established the going global policy in 2007, which encouraged Chinese organizations to go international with a focus on foreign direct investment in Africa. As a result, China became the second largest Africa’s trade partner after the United States. Regardless of the large investment and trade between the two regions, there exist large cultural differences. A 2012 study sought to find out the connection between culture and business, as well as the priorities of the two business partners for the global economy. The differences between the African and Chinese cultures were clarified using the Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions (Bakir et al. 2015, p. 230). The differences discussed focused on decision-making, motivation systems, risk-taking or avoidance, conflict management, work-group characteristics, and business strategies. The findings of the study emphasized the need to understand the culture in business. This understanding helps to gain knowledge about the various ways in which people in that particular culture behave. Without a clear understanding of the values and attitudes of the people, the business would easily offend the people and diminish its chances of survival (Anedo 2012, p. 92). According to the article, there are numerous cultural and political differences between Africa and China. While Africa is largely decentralized, China is centralized. While Africa shows elements of medium-masculinity, China exhibits medium-femininity. Moreover, Africa shows a short-term orientation, while China exhibits a long-term orientation. Unlike the Western world that exhibit a strong individualism, Africa and China show collectivism. These two partners also have a higher tendency to avoid risks as opposed to the west.
