Each of the following exegetical assignments will involve a singular passage: Deut 15:1-18. Each assignment is designed for you to investigate the passage utilizing various critical approaches 

Exegetical Assignment #1 - Literary Analysis (40 points)

Your first exegetical assignment involves doing a careful and close reading of Deut 15:1-18 and includes two parts. First, you will need to make four sets of observations on your reading of Deut 15:1-18. To do this, read the text and make a set of observations. Read the text again and make a second set of observations. You will repeat this process a third and fourth time. It is highly recommended that you do one set of reading and observations a day for four consecutive days. The better your observations,the better your understanding of the text will be and the more insightful your final paper will be. These observations should be written in bullet form and complete sentences.Be sure to note a reference of the specific chapter and verse for each observation.

Second, in paragraph form you will need to discuss your thoughts on the following questions as they relate to your chosen text. These questions will assist in exploring the literary elements of your passage.

  1. What characters, people, or people groups are mentioned in the passage? How are they portrayed?
  2. What is/are the genre(s) of this passage? In what verses? What leads you to this conclusion?
  3. Where is the passage set? What locations are spoken of in the text? Other geographic locations?
    1. Is there any mention of time or season in the passage? Any cultural or religious celebrations? Any special events?
    2. What key words or phrases appear in the passage? (List words/phrases and their location in the text.)
    3. What ideas or themes are prevalent in the passage? (List ideas/themes and their location in the text.)

First Part; Observations
First Set
* It is assumed there would be needy among the people who need to appropriate (v. 7).
* Certain such subjects of charity will never stop existing (v. 11): The poor will not leave the land, even if they are not subjected to absolute poverty, but to the point of needing to get a loan; of these poor Moses refers here, and such humans often have with them, so that a human inclination may eventually discover a charitable opportunity.
Second set
In this section, Moses issues a command.
* It is regarding debt forgiveness on each seventh year (v. 1-6), with the caveat that it should not prevent benevolent lending (v. 7-11).
* Regarding servants' discharge after seven years on the job (v. 12-18).
Third set
The law does not prohibit the creditors from collecting the obligation if the debtor or his allies can repay it; nevertheless, he may not do it using legal means. The reasons for the laws include;
* To pay tribute to the sabbatical year: Since it is referred to as the Lord's deliverance in verse 2, It was God's year for their land, just as the weekly Sabbath is God's day for them, their animals, and servants; and, just as God taught them to rely on his compassion by relaxing their field, so God will educate them to rely on his mercy by releasing their debts.
* It was to keep any Israelite from sliding into abject poverty (v. 4).
* God's assurance is provided here by a divine guarantee, so whatever they lose due to their poor debts would be composed for in God's blessing on everything they have and do, v. 4-6. Let everyone start taking care to fulfill their job, and God will reward them with such a considerable increase that whatever they might lose due to bad loans if repaid graciously, would not be overlooked out of the stockpile at the close of the year.
Fourth set
A law protects impoverished borrowers from being harmed by the previous law.
* Individuals would probably claim that if a person's situation with his borrower is such that the loan will be erased if not repaid until the year of discharge, it is best not to lend.
* It is assumed there would be impoverished people within them who might need a loan (v. 7) and that there will never be a shortage of such charitable items (v. 11)
* In this situation, people are instructed to lend or contribute as per their capacity and the situation's urgency, v. 7.
