Presidents Obama’s Speech on Health Care
President Barrack Obama presented a speech to Congress on his plans regarding healthcare reforms across the United States in September 2009. The presidents addressed the topics of basic healthcare coverage for employers and individuals, cost and revenue estimates, improvements on private insurance, waivers for underprivileged groups, and public health insurance. In the speech, he said that healthcare would not cover aliens and illegal immigrants to the country. Besides, the president argued that the United States would not use its resources to cover abortion. However, the House bill would allow a public option to include all abortions and authorize the use of federal subsidies in purchasing private insurance that can cover the issue. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the healthcare plan would not add any "dime" to the federal deficit. Although the healthcare plan would not allow citizens to change their doctors or coverage, the legislation would influence most employers to switch the coverage of their employees.
The speech of the president on healthcare lasted for 47 minutes and contained a total of 5614 words. The president remarked that the healthcare reform would not cover illegal immigrants, which prompted Joe Wilson, a Republican representative, to shout “you lie.” President Obama quoted a letter from Ted Kennedy, who had succumbed to death a few weeks before the presentation of the speech. Kennedy had composed his letter after a diagnosis with terminal brain cancer and requested that the message should be sent after his death. President Barrack Obama quoted the letter and argued that the United States faces social justice principles. He placed the healthcare reform into a historical perspective to compare it to Medicare and social security. According to the speech, America is determined for universal healthcare coverage based on the increasing costs of healthcare coverage. The plan revolved around the idea of providing affordable healthcare to all citizens.[The White House. 2009. “September 9, 2009: Address to Congress on Health Care | Miller Center.” Miller Center. https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches/september-9-2009-address-congress-health-care.] [The White House. 2009. “September 9, 2009: Address to Congress on Health Care | Miller Center.” Miller Center. https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches/september-9-2009-address-congress-health-care.]
The presidential address was a reassurance to the citizens about the future of Medicare based on a deterioration on the coverage that the Americans enjoyed. President Obama had a significant influence on healthcare reforms on Congress and the American audience. He would have found it challenging to understand the significance of universal healthcare and its effect on the list of American welfare. The president focused on appealing to the Congress and ...
