Introduction
Breaking Out Of the Box: Adventure-Based Field Instruction by Mama and Ward is a social work guide for field internship. The book covers all the areas entailed in social work internship extending from preparation through the actual application to termination and evaluation. This essay contains a summary of the first two chapters of the text, which introduce the interns to the field through a relational analysis of the social workers, i.e., the students, to the agency, clients (individual & community), and colleagues. The article examines each chapter independently, highlighting the main points and includes a personal reflection about beginning the field placement.
Chapter 1: Getting Started; Orientation to the Field and the Profession of Social Work
This chapter introduces the students to the field and the different elements entailed in the internship. It is an instructional guideline to the students on what is expected of them, what they will encounter, and how to ensure the encounters are professional and aligned to the student's, agency, and institutional goals. The section prepares the students by offering an all-round analysis of the social work field comprising the agency and the clients and how to interact with each other safely and professionally.
The first section of the chapter introduces the profession by analyzing the Code of Ethics as detailed by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW). Both unions have similar codes, which include service to humanity, social justice, dignity and worth of persons, the importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, and confidentiality. The section also explains the importance of the organizations to the students both as interns and future employees to the furtherance of education, obtaining insurance policies, and networking for achieving career prospects.
As the title states, the chapter covers the dynamics associated with social work practice explaining their (students) roles to the agency and clients. The first segment helps the interns to fit-in during the practicum by analyzing the agency routine and the dos and don’ts about office politics. The chapter, however, dwells much on field safety due to increased external environmental factors that can cause harm to social workers. The authors categorize safety concerns into two segments, i.e., when working with an individual client or with a community. On an individual client basis, it covers the use safe of automobiles during fieldwork hours as well as during home visits. It explains the conduct and the instructions to the intern to ensure safe outdoor activities and ethicality during home visitations. Agency safety in case of emergencies and overnight duties was also covered in the chapter. Mezzo and macro social work pose different security threats from individual clients. Volatile topics can easily lead to chaos, which needs careful safety measures to prevent confusion by creating a shared understanding of all the involved stakeholders.
