Written in 1969, Slaughterhouse-Five is an anti-war science fiction novel by Kurt Vonnegut. The narrator shares his experiences of the World War II and raises a number of questions in the minds of his readers by speaking against the violence and conflicts. In the book, Kurt Vonnegut also talks about the journey of Bill Pilgrim, starting from the time when he was an American soldier and used to work as a chaplain’s assistant. No doubt, Slaughterhouse Five is the most famous and influential work of Kurt Vonnegut. The author illustrates the idea that wars are good for nothing and that they should come to an end as soon as possible (Vonnegut, 2015).
In order to leave a good impression on the mind of the reader, Kurt Vonnegut begins the story of Slaughterhouse Fiver by writing the first chapter about himself. After reading this chapter, it looks like he has already come across a lot of problems. The author imagines himself in prison during the World War II and then continues his story by stating that he had been in a below-ground slaughterhouse during the Dresden’s bombing. His statements like "the nicest veterans in Schenectady were the ones who had really fought" (Chapter 1) and "even if the war did not keep coming like a glacier, there would still be a lot of deaths” (Chapter 1) make it clear that he is not happy with the onset of wars and conflicts (Vonnegut, 2015).
It took Kurt Vonnegut years to survive the war, and a lot of negative impacts were left on his mind. The only way to understand his situation, as well as the actual theme of the Slaughterhouse-Five, is by looking at the format of the novel. Billy Pilgrim is presented as the main character who is found unstuck in time, which means the narration jumps around just like the Pilgrim himself. In one of the chapters, we can read about the experiences of the Pilgrim, which are negative to an extent (Vonnegut, 2015, p. 102). Then the story of Slaughterhouse-Five jumps back to Tralfamadore, where he is found trapped in the zoo peacefully. With all of these jumps of the story, Kurt Vonnegut tries to make us understand that soldiers deal with a lot of memories and challenges during the war and that the conflicts should be ended with negotiations (Vonnegut, 2015).
The author encourages his readers to find out a safe place to live in, a place where those soldiers always wanted to live with their families. However, when they get to know that restlessness has once again trapped the nation, they are urged to forget the brutality that they have experienced until now and move on with their new task of fighting with the rivals (Vonnegut, 2015).
After reading the novel, we got to know that besides the first chapter, all of the chapters of Slaughterhouse Five have been devoted to different concepts and themes, but the message of the narrator is the same throughout the book.
