An allegory is a figure of speech in a story, play, picture, or poem where the characters or events are interpreted to have a secondary meaning that relates to morals, religion, or politics.
In the ballad, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 1919, several themes depict Christian allegory. The poem is a lyrical ballad that shows the life of an old man cursed because he killed a man that was on the same ship with him. However, one could argue that several connotations depict the idea of religion in the ballad.
Religiously, the human body reflects a person’s thoughts and actions, which is represented by the soul. In this ballad, the boat signifies the body and the Man steering the ship as the soul. The ship fails to go through the storms and winds, and the Mariner takes full responsibility for this failure. The sinking of boat resembles the death of the body, while the soul that sinned is cursed since it was up to the Mariner to save the ship from sinking as in the Bible, “You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.” (Psalm 89:9).
The theme of Christianity is also symbolized by the use of numerals that have religious references. The number three signifies the holy trinity and even the day of Christ’s resurrection after he was crucified on the cross and buried...
