The three articles share some similarities. The stories were told in times of reforms with each showing a sense of struggle between the opposing sides and with each side wondering how life would be after the reforms. In “The Wall”, the struggle is depicted by the fact of the two brothers considering all the prospects that would emerge while living in America. “My Kid Brother” discusses youth philosophies on poverty and money as well as anarchy (Chen, 1986).
“The past and the punishments” work of Yu Hua was written in the 1980s after the Cultural Revolution. It gives information on the turbulence, trouble and transition the country has undergone. The writer takes the readers through the classical China into a new era of economic and cultural reforms (HUA, 1996). It discusses how the Cultural Revolution affects the mind. “The content that the four dates concealed had hollowed, crumbled to dust and nothingness, but their aroma lingered on, and the stranger had the vague impression that if it weren’t for these four dates, his strange encounter with the punishment expert would never have transpired” (HUA, 1996, p. 121).
