The new house by Maya Angelou
The new house is a poem by Maya Angelou talks about what people leave behind in places where they have lived. The theme is about a person's personality and how his soul is left behind in places where he once lived. The poem is organized using different poetic techniques to express the theme (Faulkner, 2016).
Structure
The poem is organized in different stanzas that are series of lines grouped together, but separated from other stanzas by a line. The poem has four stanzas, with each stanza having with five lines (Wardy, 2014). The poem is descriptive in nature because it talks about the world that surrounds the speaker. Internal rhymes are placed in the middle of the lines in the first the stanza for example “these walls crushed up and down these halls" (Angelou, 2013).
Meaning
The new house is a narration of Maya Angelou painful childhood experiences depicting her suffering. Maya presents how her past haunted her and used her experience to convey her theme to the reader (Silverman, 2016).
Imagery
Readers experience a ghastly atmosphere when reading this poem, the author's mood makes the readers feel downhearted (Sadoski & Paivio, 2013). The formation of words associated with a sound of the name like crash and smash presents the impact of the experience of the author (Wardy, 2014).
Language
