Native Son
Native Son is a novel written by Richard Wright which is about a 20-year-old African-American named Bigger Thomas who lives in an impoverished area during the 1930s. A comparison of the bible verse Job 23 when it comes to their fear and emotions will be discussed.
The verse is “He knows what I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside.” The verse is exemplified by Bigger’s determination to work for his family despite of the racism and oppression he gets. The willingness he has cannot be shaken because he wants to relieve his family of poverty. This experience is not different from others because they live in an area where everyone else is living in misery, except for the whites.
Bigger Thomas is the story’s main character who lived his life dictated by the fear and anger he has for the whites and stuck in a tiny apartment. The skills and intellect he has are limited because he did not finish school. This is the hindrance for him to take any job because he does not have enough educational background to conquer any job. Aside from that, due to the poverty of his family, he fears the white people who are trying to control his life. This becomes the cause for his exaggerated reactions which leads him to commit violence (SparkNotes, 2016). “Violence is a personal necessity for the oppressed… It is not a strategy consciously devised. It is the deep, instinctive expression of a human being denied individuality.” (Wright, 1940).
The job he took is due to racism because he was only forced to take the job with Mr. Dalton. It was his mother who urged him to do so or else the family will not be relieved from poverty and will forever suffer and their source of emotion and fear happens to everyone else.
It is a situation that commonly happened during that time and it is not only Bigger who was forced by his mother to take a job just to put food on the table. Their situation is a valid source of anger and fear, especially because he did not want to take the job at first. It was his family that kept him going and the situation was inevitable during that time because the discrimination of the whites against the blacks was clear and undeniable.
Going back to the bible verse, the crises in their lives could have been considered a test which they need to endure so they will be no longer live in poverty. Having to go through all that, working in a job he does not like, and accidentally killing someone is too ...
