Hope for the Future Student’s Name Institution Hope for the Future The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler touches on many issues concerning the society today, particularly those faced by people living in the cities such as murder, teen pregnancy, robbery, and rape. We are living in a world of environmental and social crises which threatens justice all over the world. Butler presents dystopian cities where power is distributed opposite of what is today. Every person seems to have limitless power and capable of doing anything. She argues the environmental degradation is a result of destructive human activities and not the other way round. Despite painting a grim future throughout the book, Butler expresses optimism and hope for the future by advocating for change in human behavior as well as addressing environmental degradation. Butler predicts that the world will be much worse than it is today. There will be social inequality, environmental degradation, and injustice, the real problems facing our time, but a more significant level. Butler predicts a future where the cities will be in chaos. In the Parable of the Sower, society is disintegrated and threatened by the effects of climate change. Water costs more than gasoline, the police and the firefighters only serve the rich, literacy is a for privileged, designer drug gives sexual pleasure to arsonists, and no one is safe from fires, robbery, and rape despite arms, layers of protection, walls, and locked gates. ...
