Frederick Douglass is a renowned abolitionist who wrote a narrative that was an instant success. The narrative talked about his life as a slave to the time he escaped from slavery. Nonetheless, the story has a powerful political message. It paints an explicit picture of what it is to be a slave. Additionally, it depicts a clear picture of how America was before slavery was abolished.
Various quotes from his narrative clearly show that he is a unique person. For instance, the ‘I know that apologies of this sort are generally considered flat and unmeaning. I trust, however, that mine will not be so considered’ quote is one of the quotes that make him so unique. When he mentions that, he seeks to win the trust of his audience by assuring them, he is sincere, and this makes him unique from other writers because most authors seek to win the trust of their audience by use of rhetorical devices. The second quote that makes him unique is the “some know the value of education by having it. I know its value by not having it.’
Lastly the “it is easier to build strong children than to repair men’ quote also makes him unique (Engell, 2017). The two quotes make him unique because they clearly depict that Frederick was determined to prove to his audience that slavery is only detrimental to the society. The quotes show that the author takes one stand on the issue of slavery, unlike many writers who maintain two sides of an argument in their writings. Editions of the Frederick Douglass Narrative start with a preface by William Lloyd Garrison and a Letter to Douglass from Wendell Phillips (Honer, & Garraty, 2017).
