The Story of My Experiments with Truth is the autobiography of Mohandas Gandhi, which covers his life from early childhood to 1921. The author of the book wrote it in installments before its publishment in the Najivan journal. Based on the findings in the publication, t was one of the outstanding spiritual books of the 20th century. Gandhi reflects child marriage, school experience, his study tour, experiments in dietetics, experience with color segregation, return to India, quest for dharma, and work on political awakening. In the introductory part, Gandhi reveals the motivations that influenced him to write the book. Besides, he explores memories of his time in South Africa, his childhood, and a narration of the various activities after returning to India.
The book is an autobiography of Gandhi with a detailed account of his experience and aspects of Mahatma’s spiritual life. Besides, it contains five parts starting with his childhood days, experiments on truth principle, experience in South Africa, and transformation from Mohan to Mahatma until 1921 when his life became public, and Gandhi had nothing to write about (Parekh, 1997). Notably, the non-violent struggle of Gandhi in India and South Africa brought him to a new level of controversy, adulation, and notoriety that he took the opportunity of writing an autobiography to explain himself (Gandhi, 1993). Gandhi perceived that his ideas needed a comprehensive understanding while accepting his position as one of the outstanding innovators in the struggle against colonialism, racism, and violence. He reveals that he focused on truth rooted in devotion to God while attributing his success to the will of God.
Besides, Gandhi provides a compelling introduction to a nationalist saint from India as one of the complex historical figures. The author starts his autobiography as a series of newspaper articles and an account of his spiritual experience. Therefore, the readers can understand the author’s perspectives regarding his experience from childhood. Notably, the epilogue is an effective summing up of the man in all his complexity. One of the notable findings from the book is that Gandhi believed in democracy and rejected any form of violence (Parekh, 1997). Notably, Gandhi must have had an understanding that the use of violence would result in the corruption of even the noble leaders. The legacy of the author is in contrast to that of Leninists who dominated the nationalist movement.
