The following dialogue is between Emma Goldman, the writer of the pamphlet, "A New Declaration of Independence," and Thomas Paine, the author of the book, "Common Sense." In this section, each of them explains how they understand freedom and how they think it can be achieved.
Goldman: I think that ultimate freedom comes from our country's independence, liberty, justice, and a break away from the colonial oppressors.
Paine: I agree with you on that. Nevertheless, for my part, I will argue my understanding of the concept using theoretical reflections about the government and religion before specifying the colonial situation of America (Paine, 2018). Personally, I think that democracy is the opposite of the current colonial situation in our country.
Goldman: You are right. I believe that in the course of the development of humanity, when the present forms of government manifest themselves as being deficient in performing their duties of serving the citizens, the nation is termed as not being independent (Goldman, 1909). This is because the existing institutions are enslaving, robbing, and oppressing humankind. Therefore, the subjects are entitled to a divine right to rebelling against and overthrowing these organizations.
Paine: I think that the organizations and foundations that you are talking about are the government. As citizens, we can never have freedom as long as we are still under the wings of a ruling body. Therefore, let me differentiate between the government and society. Society is produced by our wants, while the government is delivered by its underhandedness (Paine, 2018). Moreover, a society advances our satisfaction by joining the forces of the people to accomplish a constructive goal, while the purpose of the government is to prevent us from our indecencies.
Goldman: I agree with you on the notion of society. To achieve freedom, the government should act according to the demands of the people and the creation of a just society. However, if you take a close look at it, the historical aspect of the kings ruling the American capital and other authorities, you will realize that it is characterized by a series of continuous crimes, wrongdoings, poor leadership, injustices, outrage and misuse (Goldman, 1909). All these vices are focusing on suppressing and blocking independent liberties and exploiting the citizens.
Paine: The rule of the king is the evil of the society ...
