Book review: Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John Ratey
Introduction
The ultimate reason for cardiovascular exercise is the desire for lifelong health. Dr. Ratey’s book published in 2014 dubbed Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain and the author explores the brain chemicals secreted during physical exercises such as BDNF, VEGF, and IGF1.
Book and motivation for choosing
The book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain describes how humans can apply cardiovascular exercises to sharpen their intellect, alleviate their moods, beat stress and enhance body functioning. The first three chapters of the book explore how physical exercises aid in brain remodeling for the achievement of brain’s peak performance. Ratey (2014) relates cardiovascular exercises and mind-body connection and uses case studies to reveal how physical exercises are effective defending the body and mind against Alzheimer's, addiction, ADD and depression. The case studies include Naperville school’s revolutionary fitness and PE program. It is a corroboration of the previous researches that have produced a positive relationship between cardiovascular exercises and improved academic performance through boosting the functioning of the brain. I was motivated by my future desire to manage and address issues related to mental health hence the reason for choosing the book that has comprehensive insights on the brain’s cognitive abilities, neurogenesis and their links to mental depression, anxiety, and ADD.
Topics of Interest
The two important topics are the ones that link cardiovascular exercises with academic performance and stress, located in the first and third chapters of the book respectively.
Exercise and the Brain
The topic is located in the first chapter of the book, and the author uses the case study of Naperville High School. The school is a good choice for the author due to the adoption of cardiovascular activities in the school’s Zero Hour physical exercise program. According to Ratey (2014), the main aim of the adoption of half-a-hour cardiovascular exercises was to improve students’ participation, attention, performance and focus in class. Ratey (2014) quotes some tests and studies conducted in the school that showed that there was a discrepancy in students’ performance regarding cardiovascular exercise participation. As a result, the school made the 30-minutes PE activity compulsory, and the consequences were a remarkable improvement in the school and students’ academic achievement.
